Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the three types of copepods?

Oithona: The smallest copepod (60-450µm), commonly found in marine environments, and ideal for corals and filter feeders. It is anti-phototactic, meaning it naturally avoids light and reproduces in shaded areas.

Apocyclops: Ranges from 100-700µm. This fast-reproducing copepod is benthic in its adult form, making it a suitable prey for fish like gobies, while young ones are planktonic and accessible to corals and filter feeders.

Tigriopus californicus (Tigrio-Pod): A larger, nutrient-dense copepod (250-1700µm) rich in astaxanthin, which enhances fish coloration. It is primarily benthic and effectively consumes algae and diatoms, contributing to tank cleanliness.

Is it safe to dose live plankton in my reef tank?

Absolutely. Nature Reef Live Phytoplankton is carefully grown and tested to ensure safety for your reef tank. Our plankton contains no harmful residues, and our custom F/2 formula does not include silicates or copper, ensuring that it is entirely reef-safe. We also conduct NO3 and PO4 test to ensure they are both reading zero, guarantee safety and stress-free to your aquarium parameters.

How do I culture copepods using Nature Reef Nannochloropsis?

To culture copepods effectively with our Nannochloropsis, dose a small amount of Nannochloropsis into the culture daily, just enough to turn the water slightly green. This provides copepods with a steady food supply to promote growth and reproduction. Be sure to maintain clean water in the culture container by performing regular water changes, as this will ensure a healthy, productive environment for the copepods.

What makes Nature Reef’s Live Phytoplankton (Nannochloropsis) unique?

Our Nannochloropsis phytoplankton is one of the highest quality available in the market. Apart from its deep green coloration which signifies a high quality culture, it is tested to ensure it contains 0 NO3 and 0 PO4, eliminating any chances of containing harmful nutrient residues. It is grown using our reef-safe, specially formulated F/2 fertilizer, which contains no silicate or copper, to guarantee the highest quality plankton for your reef tank.
